Stephen Mottram on Vinegar Painting
The
traditional, early American art of vinegar painting allows me to use my
skills to
transform ordinary,
unfinished furniture and second-hand items into extraordinary, fully
functional art – each piece original in design and meticulously handcrafted.
Even though the
process is time-consuming, it is worth the effort
given the art form’s innate flexibility and the impressive range of effects
that can be achieved. As my
Showroom illustrates, the results range
from the elegantly traditional to the captivatingly contemporary.
My
vision for a piece always involves extensive planning as far as the choice
of colors and patterns. As with all art, the design process is, by its
nature, somewhat ephemeral. With some pieces, I find that they bring within
them their own innate direction, and I immediately envision the final
result.
I may
also see a piece of furniture in a store, magazine, or museum and try to
duplicate some of the look on an unfinished item. Sometimes I have to just
handle the piece for awhile before some vision begins to emerge. Of course,
there is also the enjoyable collaboration with my clients that can take my
creativity in a direction not previously considered.
To
simulate classic wood grain effects, I like to use rich, warm earth tones
like yellow ochre, deep umber and burnt orange.
I’ve
also been using powerful primary colors like luxurious Prussian blue, lush
viridian green and sultry crimson, which gives my artwork a dramatic and
exciting new look. To view sample boards
